FT: US opposes reference to Russian aggression in G7 Ukraine statement

The US is opposing a push to identify Russia as the aggressor in a G7 statement on Ukraine, according to the Financial Times.

The draft statement is intended to mark the third anniversary of the Russian invasion on 24 February. On previous anniversaries, the G7 group of leading economies has explicitly referred to Russian aggression to characterise Moscow's unprovoked military assault on Ukraine.

For example, the 2024 statement referred to Russian aggression five times, including the sentence: “We call on Russia to immediately cease its war of aggression and completely and unconditionally withdraw its military forces from the internationally recognised territory of Ukraine.”

But Trump administration envoys are resisting a move to use similar language in this year's statement, the FT reports. Instead, they want the statement to refer to the "Ukraine conflict."

The British newspaper quotes an anonymous G7 official as saying: "There must be a distinction made between Russia and Ukraine. They are not the same."
