Fifty shades of coalitions

Single-party governments have been rare in Germany's parliamentary system. To keep track of the shifting combinations between parties, Germans have come up with catchy names – most of them inspired by the parties' colours.

Here's your rundown of potential successors to the failed "Traffic Light Coalition":
  • Grand coalition: Christian Democrats and Social Democrats
  • Black-Green: Christian Democrats and Green party
  • Kenya coalition: Christian Democrats, Social Democrats, and Greens
  • Germany coalition: Christian Democrats, Social Democrats and Free Democrats
  • Jamaica coalition: Christian Democrats, Greens, and Free Democrats
  • Black-Yellow/Tiger Duck: Christian Democrats and Free Democrats
  • Blackberry coalition: Christian Democrats, Social Democrats, and Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance
  • Black-Blue: Christian Democrats and Alternative for Germany
  • Red-Green: Social Democrats and Greens
  • R2G: Social Democrats, Linke, and Greens
  • Bahamas coalition: Christian Democrats, Alternative for Germany, and Free Democrats
Curious to learn the probability of your favourite coalition by name? Germany editor Jeremias Lin has got you covered.
