Meloni skips dinner and dismisses Putin's 'Napoleon' jibe
Giorgia Meloni made a surprise appearance at the doorsteps just as she was set to leave for Rome – earlier than planned – skipping the Ukraine-focused dinner discussions.
On Ukraine, she remains sceptical about sending troops. “The priority is fostering a peace process with security guarantees – always within the framework of the Atlantic Alliance.” Deploying troops, she argues, is the most “complex” and “least effective” option. Instead, she pushes for extending NATO’s Article 5 guarantee to Ukraine, calling it the only “stable, lasting, and effective” security guarantee.
As for her proposed EU-US summit, it remains on the table. “It’s something we have to build,” she says, stressing the importance of dialogue. “Meeting and talking is always useful,” she adds, vowing to keep working on it.
She sidestepped a question on Putin’s remark about those Europeans who “want to go back to Napoleon times and forgot how it ended.”
“Where did you hear that? A famous TV show?” Meloni quipped.
