Don't just call it rearmament, says Sánchez
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez told reporters after today's summit that he doesn't like the name 'ReArm Europe' for Europe's rearmament plan.
"Spain feels much more comfortable in this case talking about SAFE," Sánchez said, referring to Security Action For Europe, a financial instrument under the new initiative.
It's not sufficient to simply underline the defence element, he said, because the overarching matter is security.
"In the countries of the south we have somewhat different threats and we all contribute to Europe's security," Sánchez said.
Still, he made clear that Madrid supports Europe's efforts to bolster its capabilities in deterrence.
"When we talk about security and defence we are fundamentally talking about technology," he added. For example, drones that can be used in conflict can also be used to fight wildfires.
