Here's what people are saying online
A user on Reddit said police as well as ambulance staff and Fire and Emergency could be seen blocking Symonds St.
"Also if you’re walking past that way please listen to security and don’t use that crossing as they’re trying to redirect the flow of traffic. Hope everyone is okay from that incident."
Another user said: "I was walking down Symonds Street when it happened. The car mounted the kerb and swerved towards us on the footpath, then it drove up the footpath outside the Engineering school and then swerved back towards the road and hit a big group of students who were crossing Symonds Street.
"Then it hit a tree. Most of the group it drove into leapt out of the way, but there is one guy partially trapped under the car, and a woman who was lying on the road. Both are injured but alive. They are going to have to lift the car off the guy, I think."
The same user said: "The car was driven by a guy dressed in a black hoodie. Hard to know whether it was deliberate or not. But if he wasn't driving directly at the group, I can only assume he was on drugs or impaired somehow. After the car crashed in the tree, he just sat there in the front seat. By the time I left, he wasn't there. Not sure what happened to him."
Another user said: "I just spoke to a lady that helped one girl that was hit, she said that the driver was on drugs, a pipe was found in the car, and the driver was driving on the footpath. He tried to get off by going through the traffic lights right outside the engineering building but lost control and hit the tree as well as two students. the girl hit cannot move, not sure about the other student."
