Mayor of New Plymouth asks residents to be 'careful driving'
Max Brough, Mayor of New Plymouth, told residents it was a "bit breezy today" in a post on social media. "Wellington has lent us their wind. A few trees down- some power outages, be careful driving please."
He said residents due to have their rubbish collected today should keep their bin in and secure and an extra run will be done again tomorrow.
There is lots of discussion of rubbish bins on social media as high winds make waste disposal a risky business.
New Plymouth District Council initially said today's bin collection will go ahead as usual, but they will do a second run tomorrow if residents want to hold onto their bins until Saturday morning.
In an update, the council said the remainder of the bin collection is cancelled.
One Taranaki resident called for rubbish bins to have weighted bottoms, other pointed out that bin clips will keep the lid secure even if your bin takes a tumble.
In Wellington, rubbish bins have been migrating.
"Two bins randomly appeared on my lawn. Now I have 4 bins!" one lucky Wellingtonian commented on Reddit.
