Watch: 'The five villains who let down National': Hooton and Vance discuss the vote

The Post’s Andrea Vance and Matthew Hooton analyse the aftermath of Christopher Luxon surviving a National Party confidence vote.

Hooton said there were five contenders who were profiled in The Post this morning, and all of them he thinks an objective observer would say, "would do a better job as prime minister and leader of the National Party than Christopher Luxon".

"But it seems that they are all too interested in their own careers, all too interested in being the one that would become the prime minister, and as a result of that, this attitude that 'if it can't be me, then we will stick with Luxon'.

"Because of that attitude, those five people have let down the National Party, and they have left the National Party with a leader who risks taking them to its worst ever result, which was 20.93% in 2002."

Hooton went on to identify them calling them "villians".

"These people, these five, are the real villains of today: Erica Stanford, Chris Bishop, Nicola Willis, Simeon Brown, Mark Mitchell.

"They refused to compromise with one another. They refused to behave like adults and they refused to do what all of them knew needed to be done.

"And that is a disgrace. And National Party members should be very angry."
