Authority cracks down on ministers pocketing cash for living in their own homes

It will be harder for future ministers to claim $1000 per week to live in homes they own, with the Remuneration Authority cracking down on the practice.

The authority, which sets MPs’ pay and ministers’ allowances, has issued new rules for how ministers can claim their accommodation allowance. The new rules will make it harder, but not impossible, for ministers who own their Wellington homes mortgage-free to claim the full $52,000 annual allowance.

Stuff has seen the letters sent to politicians from the authority’s chairperson, Dallas Welch, which tells them there will be new rules for how ministers will claim their accommodation allowance as of November 8.
