Rural Otago school has first snow day of the year

Kate Martin, Principal at Lee Stream School, said today was the first snow day of the year and they had closed.

Martin said they are very fortunate to have a small but mighty school community with 14 students across eight families, "and our whānau are incredibly supportive and realistic about the snow".

She told Stuff that if the road is closed, then school is closed.

"Today is actually our first snow day of the year, and as per tradition, the first one is always a completely school-work-free day. Hard to believe it’s nearly November and we’re only just getting our first one!"

Lee Stream School set up a fun school day challenge, encouraging students to build a Lee Stream–themed snowman, "help out their families, and enjoy the magic of the day".

Martin said their newest student was meant to start last week, but with no power from the storm, they couldn't.

"We’re hoping Wednesday will finally be their first day!"
