Day 6 of state of emergency and 2400 still without power in Clutha
"We are on day 6 of a major state of emergency weather event," Clutha District Council said. But 2400 properties were still offline.
"While there is progress being made, this is expected to slow down because the damage is so widespread throughout the district – power outages for remote areas could last weeks rather than days.
"This is an evolving situation. We also note that some parts of the district woke up to snow this morning."
The council said many people would be feeling fatigued and it was doing its best to alleviate the discomfort and inconvenience.
"It’s wonderful to hear about the community rallying around and helping each other, especially with opening their homes to offer people the use of showers and washing machines. These sorts of gestures make all the difference especially if you have to be back at work."
