'You asked for help and you were let down': Police commissioner apologises to woman at centre of McSkimming case
Police Commissioner Richard Chambers, in a press conference, described the findings of the IPCA report as “appalling reading” that exposed a “total lack of leadership and integrity at the highest level".
He said the report showed troubling departures from proper processes for dealing with sexual assault complaints and investigations into police officers, with interference from senior leaders and the interests of a senior officer placed above those of a vulnerable woman.
“You asked for help and you were let down,” Chambers said, offering an apology to the woman at the centre of the case.
He acknowledged the courage of police staff who challenged wrongdoing, saying they “stood up and did themselves, their colleagues and the organisation proud.”
