7NEWS reports identity of hero who grabbed gun from terrorist

The cousin of a heroic beachgoer who risked his life to grab the weapon off one of the gunman has told 7NEWS he was shot twice in the ordeal.

Dramatic video captured the moment Ahmed al Ahmed tackled the gunman to the ground, likely saving countless lives in the process. He has been hailed as a hero by NSW Premier, and countless others.

Speaking outside hospital to 7NEWS, Mustafa said it was his cousin, 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, in the video. He said the father of two had been shot twice and was due to undergo surgery tonight.

Mustafa said his cousin owns a fruit shop in Sutherland and doesn't have any experience with guns. He said he happened to be walking past as the shooting unfolded, and he decided to step in.

“He’s in hospital, and we don’t know exactly what’s going on inside,” Mustafa said.

“We do hope he will be fine. He’s a hero 100 percent.”
