Willis says public transport entities not going to increase fares, but Government won't provide funding boost
Finance Minister Nicola Willis says the Government is working with public transport entities across the country to ensure they have the capacity they need when people choose to use the bus or train over driving amidst the fuel crisis.
"Already, we're choosing to switch to using a bus or a train, and our government is focused on ensuring that choice continues to remain available to as many people as possible, which is why we engage with the public transport authorities to ensure that they have the capacity that they need," she said.
"We subsidise public transport heavily as a government, because we think that the government has a role to play in supporting it."
She said she'd been assured by public transport entities that they're not intending to increase fares, however the costs the companies pay may increase as the price of diesel rises.
However when asked if public transport would be made free, Willis said the Government's main priority was making sure there was capacity across the country.
