'It will take as long as it takes': Luxon on having a government before Christmas

Christopher Luxon says it will “take as long as it takes” to form a government and offered no promise that negotiations will wrap up before Christmas.

On RNZ’s Morning Report, Luxon was asked whether a government would be in place before Christmas.

“Well, I think the key thing is we will go to the election, November 7, and we will make the case for our party votes. We will then have to look at what the New Zealand people have delivered,” he said.

“It takes us three weeks to get the writ back, which is the formal vote count; I think we will probably have to vote for that to come back.”

With roughly seven weeks between November 7 and Christmas Day, Luxon said he was still hopeful of having a government before then.

“I am hoping that we can get something put together before Christmas - would be ideal, but frankly, it will take as long as it takes,” he said.
